The Slovak Auditorium

The exhibition is conceived as a reflection on the current situation of the Slovak cultural and artistic scene, which in recent years has come under increasing political pressure and interference with its institutional autonomy. It approaches this condition as a concrete social reality whose consequences are gradually extending into the Czech geopolitical context. The project therefore addresses these developments through a Czech–Slovak dialogue grounded in geographical proximity, shared historical experience, and cultural continuity.

The exhibition title refers to the statement "Slovenská a žiadna iná!" ("Slovak and No Other!"), treating it as a symptom of a broader cultural and political framework. Rather than focusing on the statement itself as an object of critique, the exhibition examines the mechanisms through which national identity becomes a tool of demarcation, representation, and legitimisation within the cultural sphere.

The exhibition is conceived as a constellation of independent curatorial and artistic contributions that reflect on the current position of Slovak art from a range of perspectives. It evokes the setting of an auditorium—a space for listening and dialogue—bringing together a plurality of voices and strategies. These range from engagements with the institutional memory and archive of the House of Arts, through an open call testing the boundaries of the notion of "Slovak art," to explorations of survival strategies and project-based idealism, in which unrealised proposals become indicators of suppressed potential and alternative trajectories of development.

Rather than presenting a unified narrative, the exhibition seeks to articulate the complexity and contradictions of the present situation. It is not intended merely as a presentation of contemporary art, but above all as an invitation to read art as a means of reflection and the sharing of experience within a Central European context. At the same time, it raises questions about the role of cultural institutions as active participants in the public sphere, about the ways in which art can engage with shifting political and social conditions, and about what contemporary Slovak art reveals regarding the circumstances under which it is produced.
