The exhibition presents the photographic work of Brno-based artist Rostislav Čuřík, who began his creative career in the early 1980s. The presentation draws on insights gained during the preparation of an exhibition dedicated to the centenary of the Brno Secondary School of Art and Design. It introduces photographer Rostislav Čuřík as an artist who, already during his student years, created romantic images inspired by ecological themes and mannerism. His work also draws on surrealism and explores intensive overlaps with radical body performance, inspired by the Transavantgarde movement and Tadeusz Kantor’s Theatre of Death. Čuřík also worked as a documentarian of alternative cultural life, capturing the beginnings of postmodern theatrical aesthetics by playwright and director Antonín Pitínský. Many of his photographs document the generous and radical actions of his peers at the former Brno Theatre of Music. The exhibition will provide numerous revealing insights into the beginnings of postmodern thinking in visual arts in Moravia, which still await adequate study.
Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 AM–6:00 PM; extended opening hours on Wednesday until 8:00 PM.
