By the Head and by the Hands: Interactive objects in the streets of Brno
From January 27, 2026, you can encounter two temporary interventions in the Brno city space as part of the exhibition By the Head and by the Hands. The School of Arts and Crafts in Brno 1924-2024. These interactive objects were designed by Barbora Klímová and Eva Truncová, the authors of the exhibition's architecture.
The first object, located on Malinovského Square in front of the Centrum department store, features a photograph of Dalibor Chatrný, a prominent Brno artist and teacher at SŠUŘ (now SŠUD and VOŠ Brno). In the photograph, he is drawing with both hands on horizontally positioned surfaces in front of him, which symbolically divide his body in half. Drawing with both hands is a creative exercise that serves to connect both hemispheres of the brain. Considering other historical connotations, it became the leitmotif of the entire exhibition, hence the title "By the Head and by the Hands." In the public space, this life-size photograph faces passers-by who may want to try drawing with both hands using chalk. A variant of the same object is also part of the exhibition.
The second object resembles a table with an inclined plane used in various artistic disciplines. Its largest board is printed with a documentary photograph depicting the teaching of figure drawing at the then SŠUŘ. The tabletop again encourages drawing, whether of surrounding events, figures, or any notes and messages.
The main media partner of the exhibition is Czech Television.
The exhibition is held under the auspices of the Governor of the South Moravian Region Jan Grolich and the Mayor of the City of Brno Markéta Vaňková.
