Three Unisons for Four Voices - Sarah Davachi

Composed by Canadian composer Sarah Davachi for NO HAY BANDA in 2024, Three Unisons for Four Voices, for violin, cello, bass clarinet, trombone, percussion, and ondes Martenot/electronics, is a stunning 70-minute piece primarily about texture and incidental harmony. The four “voices” of the ensemble (strings, winds, percussion, ondes Martenot/electronics) proceed in a slow-moving monody that is made into a sort of variable canon by way of open and offset timings. As players gradually fall in and out of step with one another, the ear begins to focus on the acoustic spaces in between, bringing into question what it means for a sound to be felt as functioning in unison.
