The House of Art invites you to the exhibition Uncertain Domesticities – A Space for Silence, Reflection, and Inspiration
House of Arts

The Uncertain Domesticities exhibition explores the sensitive and multilayered theme of "home"—as a place, a feeling, and a lost certainty. It traces how the meaning of home shifts over time and how it shapes our relationship with the spaces we inhabit. The exhibition addresses issues of ownership and homelessness, inclusion and exclusion, rootedness and survival. Through their works, the artists reflect not only personal experiences but also broader social and ecological contexts. The exhibition poses a pressing question: Is our world still inhabitable?
A part of the exhibition is a quiet zone—a space where you can sit down in bean bags, slow down, and absorb both the gravity and beauty of the theme. Carefully selected books are available to browse, offering diverse perspectives on the exhibition’s themes—from artistic to social to philosophical.
Pause. Let the images, the words, and the silence affect you. Uncertain Homes is an experience that lingers…
In the quiet zone, you’ll find several publications, including these four selected examples:
Protest Architecture – Barricades, Camps, Expansive Tactics 1830–2023
The first international survey of protest architecture shows how barricades, camps, and tree houses have shaped public space—from the 1848 revolution to the environmental blockades of the 21st century. The book presents a rich variety of resistance forms as part of both cultural memory and political expression.
Martina Lukić Šimkovičová – Domov(ina) – Heimat
A photographic-sociological project about the search for home between Bratislava and Vienna. Through interviews, interior spaces, and personal still lifes, it explores how people build new homes, what they carry with them, and where the boundaries of home lie—in the landscape and within themselves.
Zeitumstellung – Time Shift
An artistic dialogue between works from the GDR era and contemporary approaches. The book shows how perceptions of recent history evolve and how art can become a means of understanding and transcending historical borders.
Worin unsere Stärke besteht
A powerful collection featuring fifty women artists born in the GDR, offering strong, unconventional voices across three generations. Both the exhibition and the book create space for diverse life experiences and demonstrate that art does not need to historicize in order to reflect the past.
