Semen Shyrochyn: The architecture of interwar Kyiv. The path from stylistic pluralism to Stalinist architecture.

In June, the House of Arts Brno, in cooperation with BAM and thanks to the support of the Brno Artists in Residence project, hosts Semen Shyrochyn, a popularizer of the architectural heritage of Ukrainian modernism, to whose lecture we cordially invite you:

The interwar period was a time of great change in the architecture of Kyiv. The 1920s was a unique time of stylistic pluralism, in which architecture had not yet become part of politics. However, that would change around the turn of 1930s, when only constructivist architecture was permitted. A few years later, this policy was reversed: only rich historicizing styles (mainly Neoclassical) were officially prescribed, while modern architecture was forbidden.

Political perceptions of architecture led to the arrest of architects and the revision of the results of competitions. Many projects were never implemented or significantly altered. Nevertheless, time left its mark on the face of the city. The interwar period left Kyiv with a rich and stylistically different heritage, to which belong several renowned governmental buildings.

The lecture will present some fine examples of buildings from the interwar period and provide information on important competitions, people and events that influenced the architecture of city at that time.

The lecture in English will take place on June 9 at 6 pm Dům pánů z Kunštátu, Gallery G99, Dominikánská 9.

Admission is free, reservations are not required.
