We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition Hypnotikon, which will take place on Tuesday, September 16, at 6:00 p.m. The opening remarks will be given by the exhibition’s author, Denisa Ponomarevová, together with G99 curator Barbora Trnková.

ABOUT EXHIBITION

Emoji are the digital reincarnation of a millennia-old visual tradition, stretching from ancient art to social media. Culturally encoded signs have always conveyed not only meanings but emotions as well. In the digital environment, however, they acquire new roles, functions, and effects on our experience, relationships, and communication. On social media, the focus is not only on speed, quantity, visual catchiness, and addictiveness—often at the expense of depth and nuance. The very design of the interface dictates which emotions—and in what proportions—can be expressed at all and which remain excluded.

At G99, Denisa Ponomarevová expands on her previous cycles, Demotikon and Dramatikon, in which, through the deliberately slow medium of drawing—whether on paper or in the form of textile objects—she explores questions of how the glyphs of digital platforms (de)form our relationship to ourselves and to others. Her highly personal yet rigorously analytical method of drawing enables her to deepen our view of the ongoing processes of flattening emotional experience and the restoration of complexity where it disappears into the network of emoji’s yellow holes.
