Greetings to Igor Zhoř

We cordially invite you to an exhibition talk of the exhibition Greetings to Igor Zhoř, which will take place on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 6pm. The tour will be led by curator Marika Svobodová and artist Tereza Velíková.

The event at the House of Arts will present a prominent theorist of art and art education, an organizer, curator, critic, and popularizer of art. It will revisit some of Zhoř's ideas about the nature of art and its role in society, as well as his relationship to the local art scene and his unique approach to art pedagogy, which was radically ahead of its time.

Curator Marika Svobodová’s commentary will be accompanied by an interpretation by contemporary artist Tereza Velíková, who has created a video essay for the exhibition entitled Straight to the Point. Using current footage, photographs, archival video, and interviews, the artist constructs a reflective collage that refers to Zhoř’s concept of art education for non-professional artists. In her work, the temporal sequence of events and the experiences of individual participants intertwine, layer, and overlap.

Is this practice transferable to the present? Can we understand and be inspired by it today, or has the situation of the contemporary world, art, and reality changed so profoundly that it no longer resonates?

Tereza Velíková (born 1979) is a contemporary Czech artist who has long worked with the medium of the video essay, often in the form of multi-channel works connected to spatial installations created for specific sites. In her practice, she uses fragments and excerpts of existing texts and source materials, removing them from their original context and assembling them into new wholes. These often take the form of dialogues, where disconnected and unrelated lines hinder or even prevent mutual understanding. Velíková explores and deconstructs the structures and forms of communication, as well as the possibilities of language as a tool for sharing and connection.

From 1999 to 2005, she studied in the Studio of Conceptual and Intermedia Art at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. From 2006 to 2011, she pursued doctoral studies under the supervision of Vladimír Skrepl at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. She co-founded and managed the ENTRANCE Gallery in Prague (2005–2019) and was a finalist for the Jindřich Chalupecký Award in 2014. She currently teaches in the Department of Intermedia at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Ostrava, where she runs the Concept, Object, Installation Studio together with Pavlína Čierna.
