Discussion on Lettering with Marie Fiippovová
12. 11. 2025 17:00 – 18:30
House of Arts
Graphic artist and painter Marie Filippovová is one of the most prominent figures on the Brno art scene. Her early works from the 1960s focus primarily on everyday reality and feelings of loneliness, drawing on the legacy of Skupina 42 (Group 42). Her series Melancholic Walks is a free artistic interpretation of the poems of Ivan Blatný, a member of Skupina 42 and a banned author at the time. Filippovová also worked with her own texts and incorporated writing into her paintings. Gradually, her artistic work shifted from figurative themes to abstraction. The theme of humanity, its traumas, and its position in society appears frequently in her work.
Marie Filippovová taught graphic design and typography at the Secondary School of Applied Arts from 1968 to 1969 and from 1974 to 1998. As an integral part of its history, Marie Filippovová was invited to participate in the accompanying program. Although she considers handwriting to be an extinct field today, she still sees its great potential in the context of creative development. The workshop will include a discussion about writing and practical experiences (not only) with teaching writing.
The event will take place at the Jaroslav Král Gallery and is part of a series of workshops with personalities associated with so called "šuřka". Other workshops are:
November 4 - Memory Silkscreening with Karolína Raimund
November 26 - Haptic Echo with Láďa Jezbera
December 2 - Scientific Illustration with Pavel Dvorský
