Dalibor Chatrný's work is one of the most significant phenomena in 20th-century Czech visual art. His artistic language is characterized by an extraordinary breadth of experimental approaches, a constant search for new paths, and the posing of fundamental artistic and philosophical questions. In the second half of the century, he played a key role in shaping the artistic environment in Brno.
A commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Dalibor Chatrný's birth took place on August 28, 2025, outside the House of Arts. The program began with a light intervention entitled Correlation of Spaces by Pavel Korbička, inspired by Chatrný's cube variations and the architecture of the building itself. This was followed by the video mapping Orbe pictus, an audiovisual work based on Chatrný's text of the same name from 1980, accompanied by music by composer Peter Graham.
At the beginning of 2026, the Jaroslav Král Gallery in the House of Arts will host an exhibition entitled Slova Dalibora Chatrného (The Words of Dalibor Chatrný), curated by art historian Alena Pomajzlová. The exhibition will focus on Chatrný's so-called verbal works – a specific part of his oeuvre that he systematically developed from the late 1960s onwards.
Those interested can also discover Chatrný's world through the monograph Tak teď tu. Komplementární svět Dalibora Chatrného (So Now Here. The Complementary World of Dalibor Chatrný) or the collection of studies Prostory Dalibora Chatrného (The Spaces of Dalibor Chatrný). The House of Arts has also published the author's print Orbe pictus, based on Chatrný's original book from 1980. The publication follows the color scheme of Pavel Korbička's video mapping of the same name. We would like to thank Dana Chatrná, Dalibor Chatrný's daughter, for her kind cooperation in its creation. The books are on sale at the House of Arts ticket office. Themed merchandise is also available – T-shirts and bags with the author's thumbprint motif.
