Tomas Gabzdil Libertiny (SK/NL)

Tomas Gabzdil Libertiny studied engineering and design at the Technical University in Košice, Slovakia. Thanks to a study grant, he had the opportunity to study at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he focused on painting and sculpture and continued at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava. The prestigious Huygens’ scholarship enabled him to complete his master's programme at the Design Academy Eindhoven (2006). He currently lives in Rotterdam. He is interested in bees and the sculptural use of bee work, among other things, which allows him to articulate serious psychological and physical issues of human existence and nature. Although he likes to use advanced technologies and design methods, he still leaves traces of handicraft in his work. He is fascinated by recurring patterns and imperfections of nature. His work is represented in collections in the USA (MoMA), Great Britain, Switzerland and elsewhere. In recent years he has exhibited at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice (2020), Vienna (MAK, 2019) and at the Centre Pompidou in Paris (2019).

For Brno Art Open 2022, he transformed fragments of honeycombs into a monumental sculptural object based on the shape of a gateway in its overall morphology. It will be placed in the Koliště park behind the House of Art in Malinovského Square.
