Jaroslav Král

A retrospective exhibition of Jaroslav Král showcases the oeuvre of one of the most important figures of interwar painting in Brno. Jaroslav Král belonged to the generation of The Eight group and the Visual Artists’ Group in Prague and until 1911 studied at the UMPRUM and the AVU in Prague. His work, however, did not begin to significantly develop until after WWI in Brno. In the interwar period he was a prominent mover in Brno cultural life, he co-founded the Aleš Visual Artists’ Club (1919) and after 1922 he was one of the most active and outstanding painters of the Visual Artists’ Group in Brno. Around 1920 Král’s work became the epitome of socially oriented monumental paintings, from the mid-1920s his works increasingly tended towards neo-classicism when the principal theme of his paintings was a woman. This subject persevered until his late creative period, only interrupted in the 1930s by a significant episode of lyrical cubism. Jaroslav Král’s cubist works are characterized by a number of original still-lifes bordering on abstraction. An extensive monograph will be published to coincide with the exhibition.
