We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition Ester Krumbachová that will take place in House of Arts Brno on November 23, 2021 at 6 pm. The exhibition will be opened by curators Edith Jeřábková and Kateřina Svatoňová, followed by a performance K.A.T. by New Noveta in collaboration with David Aird aka Vindicatrix and Atelier Bâba.

NEW NOVETA

New Noveta are artists Keira Fox (UK) and Ellen Freed (SWE) formed in London 2011.

They have exhibited and performed internationally since.

Their practice revolves around social conformity and its effects, drawing on behaviours and actions that divert from controlled societal structures. In their performances they display what they deem to be reactive palpable anxiety and conduct ritualistic task based actions as a means of release and revolt.

Subject matters and research have included folklore within a feminist context, female alcoholism, mental health historically and currenty, with an ongoing interest in socio political struggle and the impact this has on the body, mind and vulnerable communities.

They work often in collaboration with other artists/musicians and in mediums including costume and prop making, characterizations, installation building, as well as semi choreographing performative pieces for site specific commissions. They will present their new durational performance K.A.T for the Ester Krumbachova exhibition.

K.A.T

Set in a familiar near future of collapse and crisis, New Noveta portray the psychological toll of living under a paranoid state. Ester spent much of her career as an invisible woman in film.

Drawing on revelations from recently declassified undercover police cases in the UK, the performance will reflect on life under violently intrusive surveillance; Suspicion, dread, denunciation, crises of identity, double lives.

ESTER KRUMBACHOVÁ

The monographic exhibition will present the as yet unpublished complete estate of Ester Krumbachová, a remarkable film director, screenwriter, novelist, artist and designer of film and theatre costumes. As a visual artist Krumbachová collaborated on a number of outstanding films of the Czech new wave (Diamonds of the Night, Daisies, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, The Ear, etc.). In 1970 she made her only self-scripted film, Murdering the Devil. After 1972 she was banned from working on feature films and TV programmes. The prohibition for her to enter the Barrandov Studios was temporarily broken in 1983 when she worked together with Věra Chytilová on the film The Very Late Afternoon of a Faun. After 1990 she was able to return to film, her last work being Marian (1996), where she was responsible for the dramaturgy, set and costume design.

The exhibition will display the expansive web of original material, photographs and film excerpts to which Ester Krumbachová contributed. The artefacts will be complemented by performances, curated screenings and interventions by contemporary artists who have been inspired by Ester Krumbachová’s work.

The exhibition project is being prepared together with a monographic publication and an open online archive. These are three interrelated outputs that complete the four-year critical elaboration of Ester Krumbachová's work.

You can find current antipandemic measures HERE.

The exhibition is organized by House of Arts Brno in cooperation with Are | are-events.org.
The exhibition will be held under the auspices of Ministry of Culture and Ms Markéta Vaňková, Mayor of the City of Brno.
