Book Launch: Steklik

On Thursday 19 May, the launch of the book Steklík by Jozef Cseres and Terezia Petišková will take place in the hall of Brno House of Arts. This monograph is dedicated to the work of Jan Steklík and portrays him as an uncompromising artist who can comfortably be placed in the context of European avant-garde culture of the second half of the 20th century. This informative and richly illustrated publication is based primarily on material gathered for the Steklík exhibition held at the Brno House of Arts in 2018. It contains not only works from the artist’s studio in Ústí, but also works borrowed from over fifty contributors from many state, regional, city and private collections. The book is also the first ever comprehensive and critical contribution devoted to the life work of Jan Steklík.

The book is introduced to readers with prefaces written by members of the ‘Crusader School of Pure Humour without Jokes’, Duňa Slavíková and Paul Wilson. These are followed by literary essays by Jozef Cseres and an art-historical study by Terezia Petišková with many archival materials, accompanied by an extensive list of the author’s activities. A music CD recording, which is part of the book and provides a sound interpretation of the author’s graphic scores, serves a reminder of a significant source of inspiration for Jan Steklík. The diverse textual and pictorial material of the book was artistically unified by the graphic design of Matěj Málek, and the publishing design as a whole was conceived by Host publishing house in cooperation with Brno House of Arts and friends in the artist community.

During the evening, the book will be on sale at a special discount of 20%.
