Marie Kratochvílová

Photographer of the action scene in 1970s Brno

The exhibition will introduce the work of the photographer who can take credit for documenting conceptual and action art in Brno in the 1970s and 1980s. Apart from collaborations with artists such as J. Valoch, D. Chatrný and J. Steklík presenting their works which were by their nature temporary she will also display her own original work which she created in parallel. By its characteristics her photographic work reflects the general trend in Czech post-war photography concentrating on capturing the poetics of the everyday and simple life. It will feature cycles of minimalist photographs depicting heaps and stacks of construction material or small recurring details of architecture.
A set of photographs and texts by M. Kratochvílová from her trip to France, entitled ‘Paris’, combining an interest in the simple nature of the photographed reality with experience gained from conceptual and action projects will also be on show. With this exhibition the House of Arts will attempt to raise awareness of the varied local experimental art scene in the 1970s and 1980s and remind us of the photographer’s important contribution to documenting the outstanding phase of the Brno avant-garde. Curator: Lenka Sedláčková in collaboration with Terezie Petišková.
