THE EXHIBITION AS SPACE OF POSSIBILITY
Conference and Workshop

Working with the public in exhibitions can take on many forms besides the classical guided tour by the curator and can address various target groups. Doing that the exhibition itself may even be conceived as a medium – or to say it in the words of the education department of Documenta 12, "as a space of possibility that invites visitors to interact. Aesthetic Education begins much more with bringing up own intellectual and emotional resources than with factual knowledge.”

Aim of the project „The exhibition as space of possibility – art education with teenage visitors” was to strengthen an existing approach of continuous and innovative educational exhibition program at The Brno House of Arts and other art institutions in Brno, Czech Republic and Slovakia. The focus was set on formats for teenage and young adult visitors, who come as individuals to exhibitions.

DAY 1 was a conferende at The Brno House of Arts with lectures and discussions held in English. Based on the inputs of international art educators the chance was given to exchange experiences in this field. Offers for young individual visitors are rare and demand innovative approaches. The speakers gave insight into their work and thereby offered inspiration for all who work with this target group in exhibitions or want to do so in the future.

DAY 2 of the event was a practical workshop – a coaching for young art educators. Dedicated staff members of The Brno House of Arts and students of art pedagogy who design and realize projects already or who seek to do so in the future were given the chance to intensively development their work further under professional supervision. Besides the development of content a central point was finding strategies for possible cooperation with schools or social institutions as well as possible funding partners. The goal was reached that participants should also take on new long-term responsibilities in this field at The Brno House of Arts. Some formats that were developed in the workshop should be implemented subsequently. Marcela Lukáčová led the one-day workshop with MARCELA LUKÁČOVÁ (Slovak National Gallery Bratislava, SK), NORA STERNFELD (trafo.k Vienna, A), MARIE HANZELKOVÁ (Museum of Romani Culture Brno, CZ), UTE MARXREITER (Pinakotheken and the Museum Brandhorst Munich, D)

The event took place in the frame of the Brno Week of Culture (Týden výtvarné kultury).
