This retrospective cross-section of contemporary German photographer Sibylle Bergemann's (1941) work was organized by the Institute for Foreign Relations Stuttgart in cooperation with the Berlin Academy of Art. Bergemann's work is multi-faceted – she photographs portraits, fashion, the urban landscape, and applies herself toward photographic reportage and essays. Her work indicates respect towards people and their existential conditions, an attempt to infiltrate beneath the visible. She captures her photographic compositions of images as well as transient situational constellations based on her intuition and experiences, at times having almost surrealist inclinations, her sensibility enables her to revealing hidden relationships and oftentimes surprising meaning. Her photographic expression is often defined as poetic realism.
