Formats of Transformation 89-09 describes and interprets changes in Czech and Central European society from 1989 to 2009, using artistic and theoretical means. The presented artists approach their themes not just by working ‘forms and objects’ but also by penetrating into the system, by adopting its tools, its so-called format - propagation of information, politics, gender. Based on aesthetic and social data, they create transformation ideograms. Seven curators - Karel Císař, Michal Koleček, Martina Pachmanová, Anetta Mona Chísa, Vladimír Beskid, Marie Polášková and Tomáš Pospiszyl - raise the question whether terms like criticism, subversion and irony are contained in artists’ statements of the last 20 years and therefore give an extensive insight into the Czech and Slovak art scene.
