The Brno House of Arts hosts this year's annual exhibition of recent graduates' work from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Technical University of Brno. The gallery spaces made available at Dům Pánů z Kunštátu enabled curator Jiří Ptáček to conceive his show by employing an unusual organizational scheme: the works are arranged in strict alphabetical order according to the grades they received. His aim was to reveal, and initiate a discussion on, the inner mechanisms of art education and its rituals. The evaluation of an art student's graduate work is the symbolic zenith of the very closure of their study of art. A committee of teachers and invited colleagues give the artist a final signal, via their evaluation, prior to their assumed "entrance into the open field" of artistic practice. (Of course, we are all aware of the fact that the majority of student's have already begun to explore the "open field" of their own accord.) A, B, C, D, E, F, subtitled 2011 FaVU Graduate Alphabet, brings this signal into the public discourse and invites us to consider its reason, relativity, and, in the larger picture what it means to teach and study art.
